Is it permissible not to fulfill a promise to go to church with a Christian colleague and to stop discussing religious matters with him?

It is not permissible to go to a church, for in doing so there is an exaltation of it and an acknowledgment of its importance, and an exposure to being impressed by polytheism and its adherents. This promise must be broken, while clarifying the ruling to the disbeliever.
