Allah Almighty has commanded His servants to fulfill contracts. Among the most solemn of these is the marriage contract, which Allah described as a solemn covenant (Mithaq Ghaliz). Fulfilling it necessitates the performance of rights between the spouses. These rights vary and include:

1. Husband's rights over his wife: Enjoyment of the wife and enabling the husband to do so, unless there is a legitimate religious or health impediment. Obedience to him and his disciplining her in case of defiance (nushuz). Not permitting entry to anyone the husband dislikes entering, and not leaving the house without his permission. Protecting him in herself and his property. Serving him if she is able. Traveling with him and moving from one country to another.

2. Wife's rights over her husband: The dowry (mahr). Financial support (nafaqah). Ensuring her chastity through intercourse (i'faf bil-wat'). Spending the night with her (mabit). Justice in division if he has more than one wife.

3. Mutual rights between the spouses: Living together in kindness (mu'asharah bil-ma'ruf). Mutual enjoyment. Inheritance. Safeguarding secrets, concealing faults, and patience with mistakes.
