Is wearing a thobe daily in a Western country (Canada), where it is considered unusual, considered a "libas ash-shuhrah" (garment of fame/ostentation), knowing that the questioner prefers it for covering the 'awrah (private parts), and does this entail the sin of arrogance?

It is desirable for a Muslim to wear what the people of his country customarily wear, as long as it does not involve any religious transgression, especially if he is in a country where wearing the Arab thobe is considered unusual. In such a case, he should wear what people are accustomed to, while being careful that the trousers are not tight. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that in a land of war or disbelief, a Muslim is not commanded to differ from its people in outward appearance to avert harm, and it may even be desirable or obligatory to participate with them if there is a religious benefit in doing so. As for the land of Islam, differing is legislated.
