How is the miswak used when rinsing the mouth during ablution?
There are two opinions regarding the place of using the miswak during ablution: the first is that it should be before the tasmiyah (recitation of Bismillah), and this is the more preponderant opinion; the second is that it should be during the rinsing of the mouth. The four madhhabs (schools of thought) have agreed that using the miswak is a sunnah (recommended act) during ablution. However, they differed on whether it is considered one of the sunnahs of ablution itself or not. The Hanafis, Malikis, and one opinion among the Shafi'is hold that it is a sunnah that is part of ablution, whereas the Hanbalis and the more prominent opinion among the Shafi'is believe that it is a sunnah separate from ablution and performed prior to it.
As for how to use the miswak during ablution, it is the same as how it is used in all other circumstances. It is recommended to hold it with the right hand, then place the pinky finger below the miswak and the other fingers above it. One should begin from the right side, horizontally, then pass it over the edges of the upper and lower teeth, both externally and internally, then over the molar surfaces, then gently over the gums, tongue, and the roof of the mouth. For those who have no teeth, they should use the miswak on their gums, tongue, and the roof of their mouth.
