Commercial insurance is forbidden in all its forms, but health insurance is permissible out of necessity, because it is based on gharar (definition) (excessive uncertainty/risk) and gambling, not usury (riba). The harm of gharar is less than that of riba, so it is permitted out of necessity. A group of contemporary scholars have adopted the view that health insurance is permissible in cases of urgent need for treatment, or when it is compulsory. There is no harm in working in medical coding, as it is not considered aiding in the forbidden. The medical coder helps the hospital receive payment for services rendered, and insurance is a contract that precedes the work of the coder.
