The answer

The majority of scholars hold that the financial support (nafaqa) of an adult son is not obligatory upon his father unless the son is incapacitated. The Hanbalis, however, are of the view that the financial support of a poor son is obligatory upon his father, even if the son is an adult and in good health. If the son has no money and no earnings, then the father must spend on him with fairness, even if the son is disobedient. The obligatory financial support is the amount sufficient for food, clothing, and housing, and university education expenses are not included in the obligatory financial support.
