Is the father obligated to continue spending on his male university-student sons who are not diligent, and do the sons bear a sin for their lack of seriousness in their studies?
The father is obliged to financially support his children as long as they are young and unable to earn a living. However, once they reach maturity and are capable of earning, the majority of scholars believe that he is not obliged to support them. In contrast, the Hanbalis are of the view that it is obligatory if they are poor. Therefore, the father is not obligated to financially support his adult children, even if they are studying, and educational expenses are not included in the obligatory maintenance. Nevertheless, it is highly recommended for him to do so due to the reward of charity and maintaining kinship ties. The children should strive diligently in their studies.
