Linguistically, "al-eelaaj" (إيلاج) means insertion, and jurists (fuqaha) used it as a euphemism for intercourse (jima'). Many legal rulings are consequent upon its occurrence, including: the obligation of (ritual bath) for both spouses, the completion of the mahr (dowry), and the obligation of (waiting period) upon divorce after it.
