An engagement is merely a courtship between two parties, and there is no sin in dissolving it by either of them. The one who dissolves it is not considered unjust, even if the engagement period was long. However, it is disliked to dissolve it without a legitimate Shar'i reason. It is advised to be deliberate and not rush into dissolving it, and to strive to reconcile between completing one's studies and consummating the marriage.
