Is it better to perform the supererogatory (Sunnah) prayers in a hotel room or in the Haram when visiting Mecca and Medina? Does this ruling differ from performing them at home? And is it better for women to perform the obligatory (Fard) prayers at home or in the Haram during this visit, given that they are considered to be in a state of travel?

Scholars differed on the preference between performing Tarawih prayer in congregation in the mosque or individually at home. The Hanafis, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and the majority of his companions preferred performing it in congregation in the mosque. While Malik, Al-Shafi'i, and the majority of their companions preferred performing it individually at home, citing the Hadith (definition) of Zayd ibn Thabit, in which the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "O people, pray in your homes, for the best of prayer is a person's prayer in his home, except for the obligatory prayers."

Nevertheless, those who advocate for individual prayer at home stipulate that the worshipper must be a memorizer of the Quran, energetic and not prone to laziness, that his absence does not lead to the disruption of the congregational prayer in the mosque, and that he is not a transient (i.e., from the people of the Two Holy Mosques if he is in Mecca or Medina). In the current era, many scholars believe that performing Tarawih prayer in congregation in the mosque is better for the general populace, due to the encouragement, the beautiful voice of the Imam, and the provision of motivation, and performing it at home may lead to laziness in performing it.

As for women, it is better for them to perform Tarawih prayer in their homes, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "Do not prevent your women from the mosques, but their homes are better for them," while permitting their attendance at mosques under certain conditions.
