What is the ruling on sound effects in documentary films and the like?

Scholars have unanimously agreed on the prohibition of musical instruments, except for what has been excluded by evidence, such as the drum (duff). As for sound effects, either they produce sounds similar or strongly resembling those of musical instruments, in which case they take the same ruling, or their sound is distinct from that of musical instruments, in which case they remain subject to the original permissibility.
