What should be done when experiencing extreme tenderness of heart that hinders life's affairs?
Faith in Allah and seeking His pleasure bring happiness and peace of mind. Allah Almighty says: "Those who believe, and whose hearts find tranquility in the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts find tranquility" (Quran 13:28). And He says: "Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life" (Quran 16:97). Tenderness of heart is praiseworthy if it stems from fear of Allah, driving one to acts of obedience, but blameworthy if it hinders a servant from their duties. This can be addressed by perfecting the servitude of reliance (tawakkul), for Allah manages the universe with wisdom, and what was destined to befall a servant could not have missed them, and what was destined to miss them could not have befallen them. When the heart finds tranquility in Allah's cosmic and legislative decrees, anxiety and worry dissipate. Ibn al-Qayyim said: "If Allah wills to grant ease to His servant and relieve their burden, He sends down His tranquility upon them, so they become content with His religious decree and His predestined decree." Anxiety is a weakness of certainty (yaqeen); what is feared, if not decreed, will not occur, and if it is decreed, there is no way to avert it. Thus, certainty, reliance, and supplication are the cure.
