What is the authenticity of the story of the Prophet's donkey (peace be upon him) that dismounted into a well after his death?

Ibn al-Jawzi said: "This is a fabricated hadith, so may Allah curse its fabricator, for he intended nothing but to discredit and mock Islam." And Ibn Hibban said: "This hadith has no origin, its chain of narration is worthless, and it is not permissible to use Muhammad ibn Mazid as a source." Al-Albani ruled it to be fabricated.
