The question

Can a fibromyalgia patient who was unable to fast for many days in previous Ramadans due to illness and difficult financial circumstances be forgiven for that through seeking forgiveness and giving charity, and by making up only the fasts of the current Ramadan? Is it permissible for her to make up the fasts of the current Ramadan without making up what she missed from previous years? Will her fasting be accepted? Can making up the six days of Shawwal after making up the days of the current Ramadan atone for the fasts of previous years?

The answer

It is permissible to fast the six days of Shawwal before making up obligatory fasts, and this is the view of the majority of scholars. As for the obligatory days that have not yet been made up, they are a debt upon one's conscience, and they must be made up as long as one has the ability to do so, especially since fasting on cold and short days is easier. One should make up as many days as possible before the next , and if any remain, they must be made up consecutively when one is able, and there is no expiation for delaying the make-up fasts if the inability to do so was the reason.
