What is the ruling on pastry shops that write the name of Allah on cakes and chocolates, and should they be boycotted, or is it sufficient to offer advice?
"Writing something from the Qur'an or the names of Allah on food and sweets is disliked (makrooh). Al-Nawawi, Al-Baghawi, and Qadi Hussein have explicitly stated the permissibility of eating such food. There is no harm in eating food on which Qur'an is written, because it is not a (copy of the Qur'an) nor does it carry its meaning, and it is not forbidden to touch or carry it. Similarly, it is not disliked to write something from the Qur'an in a vessel for its water to be drunk for healing, and it is not forbidden to eat food on which Qur'an is inscribed. Although this writing is disliked, advising shops to abandon it is requested, but boycotting them is not obligatory if they do not respond to the advice."
