Does distributing rice pudding to worshippers after the completion of the Qur’an in the Fajr prayer, which my father used to do and which I have continued, constitute an act of filial piety and a permissible deed, or is it an innovation (bid'ah)?
We have previously clarified in earlier fatwas that gathering to recite the Qur'an is an act of righteousness and goodness. However, it is not considered a complete recitation (khatm) of the Qur'an unless the entire Mushaf is read, or listened to completely, or part of it is listened to and the other part is heard. We also explained the permissibility of four forms of group Qur'an recitation while advising against one form. There is no objection to feeding those gathered for recitation upon the completion of the Mushaf, as long as it is not believed to have a special virtue. However, consistently holding a banquet with every completion gives the impression of a special characteristic or a Sunnah, which is not the case. It should be omitted sometimes; otherwise, feeding people is something encouraged by the Sharia, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! Spread peace, uphold kinship ties, feed the poor, and pray at night while people are asleep, and you will enter Paradise in peace."
