The answer

The fatwa we follow is that yellowish and brownish discharges are considered menstruation during the period of one's customary cycle or if they are continuous with blood. However, brownish discharge, when seen, is not considered menstruation unless it coincides with the time of one's customary cycle. As for drops of blood after intercourse, if they and any associated brownish discharge continue for a day and a night, then they are considered menstruation. Otherwise, they are not considered menstruation, except according to the Maliki school. It is advisable to perform ghusl (ritual purification) as a precaution.
