Is it permissible to utilize the incomprehensible Friday sermon in Sangkhla by listening to another sermon or the Qur’an on the phone?

It is not permissible to engage in anything other than listening to the Friday sermon for those who attend it, even if they do not understand the sermon. The majority of scholars have held that whoever attends the sermon but does not hear it is obligated to listen attentively, meaning they should not engage in anything else. Some jurists have allowed silent remembrance (dhikr) and recitation of the Quran inwardly, but the first opinion is more sound due to the generality of the evidence, and because one who listens attentively to the sermon without hearing it receives the same reward as one who listens and hears. Malik narrated from Uthman ibn Affan, who said: "When the Imam stands to deliver the sermon on Friday, listen attentively and be silent, for the one who listens attentively but does not hear has a share (of reward) equal to that of the one who listens attentively and hears."
