The Barelviya is an extremist Sufi sect that originated in India. Their call is based on exaggerating the status of the Prophet (peace be upon him), his household, and the righteous, while showing hostility towards the Ahl al-Sunnah and diverting people from jihad. Its founder is Ahmed Raza Khan, who used to say: "If you are confused, seek help from the inhabitants of the graves," and "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has control everywhere; he is the king of the lands and the master of people." They believe that the Prophet (peace be upon him) is a light from the light of Allah, and that the entire world is under his control. They also believe that those who deny seeking help from prophets and saints are atheists. They used to build tombs, illuminate them, make vows to them, and seek blessings from them.

The Permanent Committee for Issuing Fatwas stated that praying behind someone who holds these beliefs is not permissible and invalid, because most of them are characteristics of disbelief and innovation that contradict Tawhid (monotheism) and oppose explicit Quranic verses, such as Allah's saying: (Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die) and His saying: (And that the mosques are for Allah, so do not invoke anyone along with Allah). Their innovations must be denounced to them. If they accept, then praise be to Allah. If they do not accept, they must be boycotted, and one should pray in the mosques of the Ahl al-Sunnah. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen affirmed that praying behind them is not permissible if they believe that the Prophet (peace be upon him) is alive, present, and watching, or if they seek his help, as this is Shirk (polytheism).
