Was the punishment for drinking alcohol 40 lashes during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and how many lashes does a drunkard receive?

It has been established that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, lashed the drunkard forty times. The jurists have agreed on the obligation of Hadd (punishment) for the drunkard by lashing, but they differed on its amount. The Hanafis and Malikis held that it is eighty lashes, while Al-Shafi'i held that it is forty. As for Ahmad, there are two narrations, one of which states eighty.
