It has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that the prayer of one who drinks alcohol is not accepted for forty days, and that drinking alcohol is a major sin. The alcohol drinker must repent quickly to avoid Allah's severe punishment for him, which includes being deprived of the wine of Paradise and being made to drink from "tinat al-khabal," which is the excretion of the people of Hell. Nevertheless, it cannot be definitively asserted for anyone who used to drink alcohol that they are among the people of Hell; rather, they are considered a transgressor (fasiq). If their matter is brought before the ruler, the Hadd punishment of flogging must be carried out on them, which is eighty lashes.
