Will one who drinks alcohol while praying be resurrected on the Day of Judgment among those who abandoned prayer?

Drinking alcohol is one of the major sins for which Allah has promised punishment and disgrace in this world and the Hereafter. Among the hadiths that warn against it are: "Three will never enter Paradise: the cuckold, the tomboyish women, and the habitual drunkard," and "Whoever drinks alcohol will come thirsty on the Day of Judgment."

The drinker of alcohol must hasten to sincere repentance, for persistence in this sin exposes him to a bad end, Allah's wrath, and His curse. It has been authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed ten categories of people concerning alcohol, including its drinker.

As for prayer, if a Muslim performs it while fully conscious and sane, it is valid and fulfills the obligation, and he is not considered to have abandoned prayer. However, drinking alcohol nullifies the reward of prayer, as stated in the hadith: "Whoever drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty mornings, and if he dies, he will enter the Hellfire. If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance." The non-acceptance of prayer here means not receiving its reward, even though it is sufficient in fulfilling the obligation and does not need to be repeated.
