The answer

Religion urges the maintenance of kinship ties and forbids their severance, for cutting off kinship ties has been associated with corruption on Earth. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A severer of kinship ties will not enter Paradise."

Poor treatment should not prevent one from maintaining kinship ties. Rather, it should be addressed with patience and by repelling ill-treatment with kindness. A man once came complaining about the poor treatment from his relatives, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "If what you say is true, then it is as if you are feeding them hot ashes, and you will continue to have a supporter from Allah as long as you persist in that."

If you are patient and fear Allah concerning them, their malice will not harm you.

Be keen to communicate with your brother as much as possible through phone calls or messages. Qadi Iyad said: "Maintaining kinship ties has degrees, some better than others. The lowest degree is to avoid abandoning them and to connect with them through speech, even if just by greeting."

Kinship ties should be maintained through visits and gifts, and if that is not possible, then through visits and assistance in tasks, or through correspondence if they are absent.
