What are the rulings and etiquettes related to the Sharia-compliant viewing between a suitor and his fiancée?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded looking at the prospective fiancée to achieve affection. The suitor is permitted to look at what is commonly visible of the woman. It is stipulated that the looking must be without seclusion (khalwa) or lust, and that he must be determined to propose. This should be done along with asking her family about her. It is not permissible to delve into questions that have no basis in Shariah. He must sit at a distance from her, without excessive laughter, flirtation, or overstepping, because she is still a stranger to him.
