What is the ruling on uttering names such as "Abd Al-Shafi" and "Abd Al-Salam" in their abbreviated forms, like "Abb Shafi" and "Abb Salam"?
Omitting the definite article "al-" from the Names of Majesty (Allah's Names) and transforming compound names like "Abdullah" into "Absalam" is not part of eloquent Arabic, nor is it recognized by its rules. However, if this is common in the vernacular of the people for the sake of abbreviation or endearment, there is no harm in it. Imam al-Bukhari, in his , dedicated a chapter titled "Chapter on one who called his companion by shortening his name by a letter." Examples of this include the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying to Abu Hurairah, "O Aba Hurr," and his saying to Aisha, "O A'ish." This indicates that shortening a name when calling someone is a known practice in the Arabic language. If this is the habit of those speaking and they understand each other by it, there is no harm, unless the intention is to belittle one of Allah's names, in which case it is forbidden and may amount to disbelief (kufr).
