Is it considered obligatory to return the "rafd" of marriage (what is paid as assistance to the groom), and must it be in kind or can it differ, and is it considered a debt?

It is sunnah to reward and appreciate one who gives a gift, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He used to accept gifts and reward for them," and he also said: "Whoever does a favor for you, reciprocate it." Therefore, the "rafda" (traditional gift) given to thebride and groom is considered a gift, and they are permitted to accept it and to reciprocate the givers on their occasions. If there are indications that the gift was given with the expectation of a reward, then the recipient should return a similar gift to the giver on their occasion.
