Does a mother hold a great status in the religion, no matter how cruel she becomes or how evil her deeds are? What is the best way to deal with her and establish proof against her, knowing that she utters evil, mistreats others, and slanders her son's wife's honor, despite his kindness to her and his bearing of her responsibility?

If your mother is abusive and unjust towards you and your wife, her right over you does not cease. You must strive to honor her and be patient with her, and rid yourself of her anger and displeasure by honoring her in a way that does not harm you. Malik was asked by someone about his mother who ordered him to give something to his sister, and he said: "I do not think you should provoke her; rather, rid yourself of her anger as much as you are able." That is: rid yourself of her displeasure as much as you are able. Purify your intention for Allah and seek reward, for honoring one's mother is among the best deeds, and patience with her is among the greatest causes for Allah's pleasure.
