What should a wife do if her husband frequently quarrels and curses, and almost hits her in front of their children, given his wrongdoings, and knowing that complaining to others is considered backbiting?

Allah has made clear that each spouse has a right over the other, and He has made it obligatory to fulfill this right during marriage and separation. He has forbidden keeping a wife with the intention of harming her. Islam has commanded good companionship with the wife, and refraining from cursing, reviling, or insulting her. Therefore, it is not permissible for a husband to curse his wife because she has been singled out for extra care in good companionship. Guardianship (qawamah) means managing the affairs of the wife and the home. What this husband is doing is an abuse and a lack of understanding of religious law, and he must repent and apologize to his wife.
