What is soothsaying?

Divination is the claim to know the unseen. Diviners and soothsayers may be informed by devils about certain matters or be apprised of something lost, and they may resort to trickery to know the unknown. These things occur due to deception, fraud, and cooperation with devils. For Allah alone knows the unseen, as stated in the verse: ﴿Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah, and they perceive not when they will be resurrected."﴾ (An-Naml:65). A Muslim must avoid dealing with them, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever comes to a diviner or a soothsayer and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)."
