What is the relationship between the fear of not doing justice to orphans and polygyny as mentioned in the verse: "And if you fear that you will not deal justly with orphan women, then marry of [other] women as seems good to you, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice]"? And what is the wisdom behind that?

The relationship between orphans and polygyny becomes clear in the verse from the reason for its revelation. It is narrated from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that an orphan girl would be under the guardianship of her guardian, who would desire her beauty and wealth, and would want to marry her for less than the customary dower. So, they were forbidden from marrying them unless with fairness, and were commanded to marry other women instead. The intention is to abandon what is harmful for what is not harmful. Scholars differed in interpreting the word "fear" (الخوف); some said it means "you are certain," while others said it means "you assume," which is the view preferred by most scholars.
