What is the ruling on using narcotics when a person's soul is departing?

Death is the departure of the soul and its transfer from the confines of this world to the realm of the Hereafter. Amr ibn al-Aas described the throes of death as mountains upon the neck, thorns in the gut, and the soul exiting through the eye of a needle.

The use of narcotics and painkillers for the dying is not permissible for several reasons: 1. Lack of Necessity: Narcotics do not alleviate the pains of theiz, because it is an unseen process unaffected by physical treatments. 2. Harms of Narcotics: They have health complications and are considered a poison. Introducing a definite harm to avert a perceived doubt is unacceptable. 3. Loss of the Virtue of the Shahada: Anesthesia may deprive a righteous servant from uttering the Shahada at the time of death, which is a great virtue that leads to entry into Paradise.
