What are the possible meanings of the term "fitnah" as it appears repeatedly in the Qur’an?

Linguistically, "fitnah" means trial and test. Its origin comes from the melting of gold and silver to distinguish the good from the bad. Its usage has expanded to include sin, disbelief, fighting, burning, and removal. Ibn al-A'rabi summarized its meanings as: testing, ordeal, wealth, children, disbelief, اختلاف of opinions, and burning with fire.

As for the Qur'an and Sunnah, "fitnah" is mentioned with several meanings, including: 1. Trial and test: "Do people think that they will be left alone because they say, 'We believe,' and will not be tried?" 2. Hindering and turning away from the path: "And beware of them, lest they turn you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you." 3. Punishment: "Then, indeed, your Lord, to those who emigrated after they had been tried..." 4. Shirk and disbelief: "And fight them until there is no [more] fitnah." 5. Falling into sins and hypocrisy: "But you tempted yourselves." 6. The intermingling of truth with falsehood: "If you do not do so, there will be fitnah on earth and great corruption." 7. Misguidance: "And whoever Allah wills his fitnah..." 8. Killing and captivity: "If you fear that those who disbelieve will afflict you." 9. Disagreement among people and disunity of hearts: "And they would have rushed through you, seeking fitnah among you." 10. Madness: "Which of you is afflicted [with madness]." 11. Burning with fire: "Indeed, those who tormented the believing men and believing women."

The intended meaning of the word "fitnah" is understood based on the context and surrounding clues. Ibn al-Qayyim clarified that the "fitnah" that Allah attributes to Himself means trial and test with good and evil. It differs from the "fitnah" of polytheists or the "fitnah" of a believer in his wealth and children, and from the "fitnah" that occurs among Muslims.
