Is it permissible for a wife to deny herself to her husband and abandon showing affection to him, when he falls short in providing for her, especially regarding medical treatment, clothing, and adornment, while she fulfills her duties towards him and the household?

Among the wife's rights upon her husband is maintenance according to what is customary (al-ma'ruf), which includes housing, food, drink, clothing, and medical treatment, as well as essential adornment, the lack of which would harm the woman. If the husband fulfills this right, the wife is not entitled to ask for more, and if she then refuses his bed, she is sinful. However, if the husband falls short in providing maintenance while being capable, he is sinful, and the wife is permitted to take from his money what suffices her and her child according to what is customary. If his shortfall is due to poverty, despite his striving to earn a livelihood, then there is no sin upon him. In both cases of shortfall, the wife is permitted to refuse his bed.
