Does the word "al-banūn" (sons/children) in the Arabic language refer exclusively to males to the exclusion of females, and if so, how do we respond to the objection of non-Muslims that verse 46 of Surat Al-Kahf (The Cave) favors males over females?

In the Arabic language, "al-banūn" refers to males, and they were made the adornment of the worldly life because of the strength, defense, and assistance they provide, especially in old age, and because they ensure the continuation of progeny. The Quran specifically mentioned sons because the love for them is generally more encompassing and widespread than the love for daughters. However, Islam has encouraged kindness towards daughters and has promised a great reward for raising them.
