What is the ruling on bodybuilding in Islam, and is it permissible to strengthen the physical build like wrestlers to benefit from it while concealing it?
Bodybuilding aims to build a strong and healthy body, which is a desirable goal. Islam has given attention to the human being, both in spirit and body, and has encouraged sports that build the body and maintain health. However, it has not made it an end in itself, but rather a means to preserve the religion and the dignity of Muslims.
If the purpose of the sport is to prepare the body for jihad and to uphold the word of Allah, then it is مطلوب (desired/commanded), based on the Almighty's saying: "And prepare against them whatever you are able of power," and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer." If the purpose is recreation and maintaining health, then it is مباح (permissible).
However, if it involves something forbidden, such as neglecting prayers, or uncovering 'awrah (the 'awrah of a man is from the navel to the knee), or impermissible mixing, then it becomes haram (forbidden). It should be noted that some practitioners of this sport are driven by negative motivations such as self-admiration and arrogance. Also, exaggeration and extremism in body enhancement may distract a Muslim from what is more important.
