What is tolerance and what is Islam's stance on it?

Tolerance in Islam means waiving rights, being fair to oneself, and practicing justice and benevolence towards others. These qualities are among the most prominent characteristics of Islam, commanded by Allah in the Quran, and encouraged by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Tolerance leads to compassion, affection, and cooperation among people, enabling them to live in happiness and harmony. In contrast, intolerance spreads hatred, animosity, injustice, and conflict. Islam allows followers of other religions to adhere to their faith, for Allah Almighty said: "There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion," and it encourages kindness towards them as long as they do not fight Muslims. The tolerance of Islam is not limited to humans alone, but extends to include animals, plants, and the entire universe.
