What is meant by the phrase "لا ينبغي" (it is not appropriate/should not) in fatwas, and does it mean haram (forbidden) or makruh (disliked)?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The jurists have conventionally used the phrase "should (yanbaghi)" to denote recommendation (istihbab) and "should not (la yanbaghi)" to denote dislike (karahah). This is a newly introduced convention, generally adhered to for ease of issuing fatwas, even though the great Imams did not adhere to it. The words of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) should not be interpreted through this convention.
