Concerning whom was the noble verse revealed: "And a witness from the Children of Israel bore witness to its similitude, so he believed and you were arrogant," and what is the dispute among the exegetes regarding that, along with each one's proof?

Commentators have differed regarding the Israelite witness mentioned in verse 10 of Surat Al-Ahqaf. Some said that he was a man from Mecca, and this is what Ibn Jarir preferred, based on the unanimous agreement that the Surah is Makkan. Others said that he was the Companion Abdullah ibn Salam, and this is the more probable view. They cite the hadith of Awf ibn Malik, narrated by Ahmad and authenticated by Al-Albani, in which Abdullah ibn Salam bore witness to the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) after the Jews acknowledged his knowledge and understanding. Then the verse descended: ﴿Say, "Have you considered: if it was from Allah and you disbelieved in it while a witness from among the Children of Israel has testified to that which is similar to it and believed, while you remained arrogant—indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people."﴾ [Al-Ahqaf: 10].
