What is the ruling on using a drum open from one side, and striking two pieces of wood instead of clapping in celebrations?

All musical instruments and entertainment devices are forbidden, including the open drum, which is not permissible to use on any occasion. An exception to this is the duff (tambourine) on appropriate occasions. As for striking two pieces of wood together like a clapper, its ruling is similar to clapping. It is disliked if done without need, and becomes forbidden if intended for amusement or imitating women. Some scholars have held it permissible even if intended for play, provided it does not involve forbidden musical ecstasy.
