Is khulʿ counted as one of the three divorce pronouncements, and how does the husband take his wife back after khulʿ? And if she returns to him, does she return with a new set of three pronouncements, or does she return with the remaining pronouncements she had before? And what should they do if they wish to reconcile now, knowing that the husband had divorced his wife twice and taken her back during the waiting period, and then she initiated khulʿ afterwards?

Scholars have differed concerning khulʿ (divorce at the instance of the wife), and the preponderant opinion is that it is an irrevocable divorce (ṭalāq bā’in) that counts as one of the three divorces. If the husband had divorced his wife twice before the khulʿ, then she is irrevocably separated from him with a major separation (baynūnah kubrā), and she does not become lawful for him until she marries another husband with a valid marriage, free from any intention of making her lawful (taḥlīl). However, if he had not divorced her before the khulʿ, or had divorced her only once, then he may marry her with a new contract and a new mahr.
