Is one who dies while committing an innovation—such as an innovated form of dhikr—held accountable if it was due to their ignorance, or are they excused for not knowing its impermissibility? And is ignorance an excuse for one who did not research matters of their religion or general life matters?

We hope to God that He will forgive the followers who, out of ignorance and error, followed the people of innovation (Ahl al-Bid'ah). Scholars have mentioned that among the considerations for excusing ignorance is the ignorance of the common, imitative people regarding the state of their misguided leaders, and their good opinion of them, so long as the truth of their matter has not become clear to them. This is in contrast to those who do not seek the truth out of aversion to it; these will be held accountable for their ignorance.
