The answer

Standing in the obligatory prayer is a فرض (obligatory duty). The sick person knows best the extent of their pain. If the pain is slight and bearable, then she must pray standing. However, if the pain is unbearable, then she may pray sitting, based on the hadith of Imran ibn Husayn: «Pray standing, and if you are unable, then sitting, and if you are unable, then on your side.» One who is unable to stand is permitted to pray sitting; in fact, it may become incumbent upon her to do so if standing would cause harm, due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: «There should be no harm nor reciprocating harm,» and due to the Almighty’s saying: ﴿Allah intends ease for you and does not intend hardship for you.﴾ (2:185). Foot pain is an excuse if one is unable to stand with it or if it causes unbearable difficulty. The people of knowledge have agreed that a sick person who cannot stand in the obligatory prayer is excused for that and prays sitting, and he receives the full reward, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: «If a servant falls ill or travels, what he used to do when healthy and resident is recorded for him.» The criterion for inability is evident difficulty. So, if one fears severe hardship or an increase in illness, one prays sitting, and there is no need for repetition.
