Is he who dies by suffocation considered a martyr?

It is not possible to deem someone who died by suffocation a martyr, as there is no textual evidence to support this. However, it is hoped that a monotheistic Muslim who dies from a cause involving hardship and pain may be among the martyrs, if they are patient and seek their reward from Allah, and are free from impediments. The Prophet (peace be upon him) enumerated various types of martyrs who die deaths involving hardship and pain, and "every death by which a Muslim dies is martyrdom," though martyrdom varies in degree.
