What was the reason for the revelation of Surat Al-Baqarah?

Surat Al-Baqarah was revealed in separate parts and not all at once. Some of its verses have specific occasions for their revelation, such as the verse: ﴿They ask you concerning fighting in the Sacred Month (i.e. Qital in it). Say, "Fighting therein is a great (transgression)."﴾ [Al-Baqarah:217], which was revealed due to a mistake committed by Abdullah ibn Jahsh and his companions who fought the polytheists in the Sacred Month. The verse clarifies that the actions of the polytheists, such as hindering from the way of Allah, disbelief in Him, and expelling believers from Al-Masjid Al-Haram, are greater than this mistake.
