What is the expiation for selling a music disc after learning that music is forbidden, citing the hadith: "إن الله إذا حرم شيئاً حرم ثمنه"?
The the questioner referred to was narrated by Al-Daraqutni and Ibn Hibban from Ibn Abbas with the wording: "Allah cursed the Jews, for Allah forbade them animal fats, but they sold them and consumed their price. Verily, when Allah forbids a thing, He also forbids its price." Al-Albani graded it as authentic, and its origin is in the Two Sahihs from Jabir. It would have been better not to sell the disk, but rather to record religious or scientific materials on it. Since he sold it and bought Islamic books with its price, he should make them for the general benefit of Muslims, and he may benefit from them like others. Unlawful wealth should not be used for personal gain; rather, it should be spent on charitable causes and public welfare. There is no expiation for him except seeking forgiveness.
