What is the meaning of this supplication: "And grant us wrongdoers to the righteous"?

Seeking Allah's pardon for wrongdoers because of the righteous is permissible, for the companionship of good people is a means for the wrongdoer to be forgiven. They are a people whose companion will not suffer, as stated in the Hadith about the example of the righteous companion. However, it is not permissible for a Muslim to rely on this to expiate his sins. Rather, he must repent, hold himself accountable, strive against his lower self, perform his duties, and avoid prohibitions, all while hoping for Allah's pardon. For no one will enter Paradise by their deeds alone, unless Allah encompasses them with His mercy and grace.
