What is the ruling of the Shariah on a volunteer involved in building a mosque and overseeing its endowments taking from donations and the yield of the endowment to meet his personal needs and the expenses of his family, given that he is suffering from financial hardship and the construction is nearing completion?

If the donors specify the expenditure of their charities for the mosque and the endowment, then it is not permissible to take anything from it, in consideration of the donor's intent. However, if their donations are unrestricted, scholars have differed regarding the ruling on whether a needy agent may take from it, and the more cautious approach is not to take except with their permission.
