It is forbidden to propose to an engaged woman if there has been mutual inclination from her or her guardian, unless the first suitor is immoral, in which case it is permissible for a second suitor to propose to her. However, if an uncoerced engaged woman retracts from the engagement, it is permissible for a second suitor to propose to her. As for the coerced woman, if she dislikes the first suitor and chooses another, the ruling of her guardian's acceptance is nullified, because her choice takes precedence. And if she dislikes him and permits no one else, then the ruling of her guardian's acceptance should also be nullified. Some scholars have stated that the acceptance or rejection of a coerced woman has no effect, because her guardian has the right to marry her off without her consent.
