Does divorce occur with the statement, "If you tell her what happened between us in our discussion, then you are divorced," if the wife informs her, knowing that the intention was to deter her and not to divorce?

Divorce occurs when the wife informs her brother of what she was forbidden to do, even if the husband only intended to threaten her. This is the view of most scholars. If this divorce does not complete the three (talaqs), the husband may take his wife back during her iddah (waiting period). Some scholars, like Ibn Taymiyyah, held that a conditional divorce intended as a threat is treated like an oath, meaning no divorce takes place, but an expiation (kaffarah) is due if the condition is violated.
