What is the most appropriate action to take with a husband addicted to pornography and negligent in sexual relations: to file for divorce or to confront him?

Watching pornographic films is a great tribulation, and persistence in it permits the wife to seek divorce from her husband because it is an act of transgression (fisq).

However, one should not rush into seeking a divorce. Rather, the wife should strive to reform her husband through several matters:

1. Pray for him and ask Allah for guidance, for Allah is capable of guiding him: ﴿And Allah invites to the Home of Peace and guides whom He wills to a straight path.﴾ [Yunus: 25], and ﴿And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you."﴾ [Ghafir: 60].

2. Offer indirect advice, by playing audio clips of admonitions that remind one of Allah and encourage uprightness and avoidance of sins.

3. If indirect advice is not effective, then offer direct advice in a kind manner, for gentleness adorns a thing, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, gentleness is not in anything except that it beautifies it, and it is not removed from anything except that it disgraces it."

If the husband repents, then praise be to Allah. Otherwise, the wife should consider what is most appropriate: separating from him or remaining with him while continuing to offer advice.
